Tesla executives have set a timeline for commercializing its purpose-built autonomous vehicle, signaling a shift in inventory strategy as production continues at its Texas facility. On October 21, during the company's third-quarter 2026 earnings call, Vice President of Engineering Lars Moravy addressed the availability of the Cybercab. The company is targeting deliveries to external customers before the calendar year ends, specifically aiming for the close of 2026.
However, current output from the Gigafactory Texas production line is being allocated internally. Moravy stated, "We’re trying to get Cybercabs to customers by the end of this year, 2026," but clarified that "all of those are currently going to our own internal Robotaxi fleet." As operations expand, the company intends to transition toward delivering "fully designed autonomous vehicles to our customers," with the Cybercab serving as the inaugural model for this specific class of vehicle. Initial shipments to buyers will remain limited while the company establishes protocols regarding delivery logistics, ownership structures, and fleet management.
Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk emphasized that the vehicle is not intended for traditional individual ownership. He characterized the product as "transport-as-a-service," drawing a distinction between the Cybercab and personal vehicles like the Model 3 or Model Y. "The vast majority of the Cybercab stuff will be Tesla-owned and transport-as-a-service," Musk said, confirming that most units will operate under company control rather than private ownership.
The Cybercab is a two-seat vehicle manufactured without a steering wheel or pedals, relying entirely on Tesla's Full Self-Driving suite for operation. Manufacturing commenced in February of this year, and units began entering the Robotaxi service in early September. Regarding potential sales, Tesla has previously indicated a price point of approximately $30,000 per vehicle.
Looking ahead, the release of unsupervised Full Self-Driving capabilities to consumer vehicles is expected during the second quarter of 2027, according to Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla's Head of AI. Deliveries of the Cybercab face additional obstacles, as early buyers or fleet operators may receive vehicles with autonomous capabilities limited by specific geographic regions due to lagging regulatory agencies.
